God is Myth Records is proud to present Illinois based blacked doom outfit VELNIAS. The bands music can be best described as a combination of sorrowful black metal with a very doomy atmosphere, combined with elements of folk. Although the band definately has their own sound, one could easily find comparisons to bands like OPETH, AGALLOCH, PRIMORDIAL & WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM.
“Sovereign Nocturnal”, the bands debut album is miles ahead of their 2007 demo “Pacing the Cyclic Nether” in terms of maturity, songcraft & production. With the three songs combining for a total running time of 41 minutes & 15 seconds the emphasis has been laid upon a musical foundation of progressive yet feral riffs intertwining with delicate passages that only make the heavier parts that much more potent, not unlike early Opeth & Agalloch! Combined with lyrical content based upon the premise that the human race is insignificant compared to the grand power and prestige of nature this is a debut album that should not be dismissed!
Four rather lengthy tracks of 'celestial' post-rock featuring God is Myth Records label owner Todd Paulson (all instruments and programming) and Andrew Curtis-Brignell (vocals) from the mighty UK post-black metal project CAINA. This material was recorded last spring/summer and came together out of a shared passion for bands like MOGWAI, MAGYAR POSSE, CERBERUS SHOAL, MONO, EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY, ISIS, CULT OF LUNA, 70'S rock, metal and other forms of 'celestial' music. Continuing on with our fascination with dark and emotional acoustic music we have unearthed another gem. This time in the form of Stroszek’s (Italy) "Songs of Remorse" debut album. The band's namesake (Stroszek) comes from the WERNER HERZOG film of the same name and is the perfect moniker for a band with such a gloomy atmosphere. While the band contains members of one of Italy's most respected black metal acts FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, this should be looked upon as a seperate entity and not just a 'side project'. With carefully strummed minor key acoustic guitars, deliberate yet restrained piano lines, bursts of heaviness added for texture and deep, lush clean sung vocals that relay a sense of dread lurking beneath the surface, "songs of remorse" is perhaps at once one of the most melancholic yet accessible albums of 2007...
Every once in awhile we get a promo in the mail from a band/artist that is so completely out of left field and stunning that we make plans right away to put out an album by said band/artist. DORMANT is the newest project from God is Myth label owner and former UVALL(which released two cd's on Blackmetal.com) proprietor Todd Paulson. He decided to move away from the somewhat strict confines of a straight forward black metal project such as UVALL to concentrate on this more ambitious work. Combining aspects of black metal, heavy metal, rock and neo-folk, along with unusual song structures the results of the debut album make for a very earhty and organic expirience. This work also includes appearences by Andrew Curtis-Brignell (CAINA) who contributed lyrics and vocals to the opening track entitled "Black Ashes" as well as Tanner Anderson (CELESTIIAL) who plays hammered dulcimer on the title track. What can be said about the amazing Dead Raven Choir that hasn't been said already? This release marks the return of D.R.C. after a slew of releases on some very respectable cd-r labels, not to mention 2003's "Wine, Women and Wolves" cd (Last Visible Dog) as well as last years "Cask Strength Black Metal" 3 LP box set (Weird Forest) which was a re-issue of ALL of the "Choir's" ugly, noisy, totally fuzzed out black metal on vinyl format. Smolken returns to the dark, avante-garde neo-folk side of Dead Raven Choir that has made this such a unique and awe inspiring musical journey. Selenoclast Wolves is an album that runs the gammet of emotions; Whether it be the creepy lurch and sway of the track "The Silence", the brooding melancholy of "When Men Die", or the sheer manic violence of "I am Not a Recluse" the common feeling throughout is one of complete isolation. As a bonus this cd will contain the complete re-issue of the "Lesbian Corpse Wolves" album which was limited to ONLY 30 copies. All completely re-mastered by Frédéric Arbour (Cyclic Law, Visions, Longing for Dawn). On "Lesbian Corpse Wolves" most of the vocals were handled by the beautiful voice of Emily Salvatierra. Aversion Online once said of this release that these "...dark, folk-ish compositions rely heavily on picking accents and clashing notes that are both melodic and completely discordant all at once..." and we could not agree more. Now lets all raise a glass (or goblet perhaps?) and thank Mr. Smolken for resurrecting his fascinating project once again!!!
